BLURB:
Homeless and without any family, Arden Stephens must live on the streets of mid 19th century London, never a safe place for a young woman. One night, as she is running for her life from an attacker, she is rescued by Brandon Ridley and offered a place in his home as his maid. Brandon is enchanted by Arden from the moment they meet, but just as she has secrets, so too does he. A vampire hundreds of years old, he yearns for the companionship she can give him. But for that he must make her one of his kind.
Nightly, he visits her in her sleep, preparing her for the night he will finally make her his own. For Arden, the wanton dreams she has about her handsome employer seduce her and each day when she wakes up, she finds herself more drawn to him. But love and desire aren't enough for Brandon to sire her. He must first obtain the approval of his maker, an ancient vampire named Vasilije who has thwarted his chance for happiness before.
But if Brandon can convince him, he may finally find the love he's been without for centuries.
EXCERPT:
London, 1850
The dark streets of the city lay sprawled out in front of her, filled with both possible danger and salvation. As she ran, her feet pounding against the stones beneath them, her breathing came in pants that stole the moisture from her mouth. Her eyes frantically scanned for someplace to hide as she pushed her legs to run faster.
She could hear his feet as each one solidly hit the ground behind her. His stride much longer than hers, he was coming closer with each step.
If he caught her...
The pounding of her heart hammered in her ears as the blood pushed faster and faster through her body. Up ahead, she saw a door ajar in a rundown building. If it was empty, she might be able to find a place to hide and hopefully escape from the pain of what awaited her if he captured her.
She slipped through the doorway, but her cape caught on the doorknob, costing her precious moments. As she worked to free herself, she heard his footsteps slow down to a walk, a sign he was as sure as she that he’d won.
Finally, in desperation, she tore the fabric from the knob, and free to run once more, she turned and ran headlong into the chest of a man who stood silently watching her.
“Please save me! He’s coming for me!
Without a word, the stranger took her by the arm and led her to a table near the far wall. With his hands on her shoulders, he hesitated a moment and then spun her around.
His voice deep, he commanded, “Place your hands on the table and bend over.”
Unsure if she’d chosen a fate as horrific as the one she’d fled from, she did as she’d been told and waited in terror for what was to come.
The noise of her stalker entering the building caused her to turn her head, but the voice behind her sternly warned, “Face forward.”
She felt hands lift her cloak and dress, allowing the cool night air to hit the bare skin of her thighs. The feeling at once thrilled and shocked her, and she instinctively stood up to cover herself.
The man behind her forcibly pushed her back toward the table and leaned over her to whisper low in her ear, “Trust me,” as he pushed his body firmly against her backside.
“Hey you! Where’s the girl who came in here?”
With his hands on her hips, the man who gave her no choice but to trust him pushed his hips toward hers and thrust toward her still clothed body to simulate sex, complete with throaty groans.
“Hey! I asked you about the girl who came in here!”
Never looking back, Arden squeezed her eyes closed, shutting out the moonlight that streamed in through the window above, and waited for the attack she feared. Instead, she heard the man whose body continued to meet hers bark, “Go away! This whore’s mine!”
Indignant at the use of the word whore to describe her, she started to push herself up but his hand held her by the neck and forced her to remain still on the table. A sound like a hiss came from her protector and the other man hurriedly ran out of the building.
A hardness brushed past her thighs and she realized while she’d escaped death, she now faced being raped by this stranger who had asked her to trust him. Over and over, his erection teased her. Fear turned to arousal as she felt his stiff cock press toward her and her body begin to want him. His hand on her neck eased almost to a caress as he continued to hold her down.
Noises behind them told her the original attacker had been chased off, and when the thrusts stopped, she pushed back against him, forcing him off her. Spinning around, she smoothed her dress and snapped, “You are no gentleman! Whore?”
The man stood looking at her, a small grin creeping onto his lips. In a voice far silkier than she’d heard from him before, he said, “You didn’t need a gentleman.”

I have been writing since I was 29….now do I have to tell you my age? J That makes it 19 years of serious writing. I actually started in High School, some short stories and such. But I really didn’t get serious and write my first novel until years later. My kids started school and I was bored, so a neighbor got me started reading romance. I’ve always been a daydreamer, so I thought: I can do this. There has been no turning back and no regrets.
3) What was your first published book? Looking back, is there anything you’d change about it?
My first Published book was DEADLY OBSESSION. It was the 5th written book. I started writing Historical Romance, then a friend suggested I try romantic suspense. I discovered it was what I should have been writing all along. My true calling. I like dark fiction. My Historicals did later get published, but I don’t intend on writing more in that genre. Now I am concentrating on dark paranormal romance. But what would I change about it? Wouldn’t we love to rewrite them? My writing has grown a lot since then.
4) What or Who has influenced your writing?
Sandra Brown was an early influence. I wanted to write just like her. Later in my career, Lara Adrian has become my rock. She has been there to praise, critique and offer me a shoulder when I thought I was ready to give up. She’s been a huge influence on me and the reason I am still writing today.
5) Where do you get your ideas?
Wow…that’s scary considering what I write. My head. Sometimes the smallest thing in life will trigger a book. My mom bought a vacuum sealer and I came up with an entire novel over the idea that formed called LOVE YOU TO PIECES. Hopefully, that will be my next published work. I’m pretty happy with the way the book came out.
6) What hinders your writing? (distractions? noise?)The Internet! I have little self-discipline and it doesn’t take much for my mind to wander off. I really need to shut that off when I am writing. The family can also be a distraction…they seem to want my time as well. J
7) What genre are you most comfortable with? What would you like to explore?I am most comfortable with Romantic Suspense. I love everything about it. As I said above, though, I am trying my hand at a three book paranormal romance series. I think I have a great idea…but we’ll leave it at that for now. I need to get much further into the book before I make any grand announcements of what my next book is. But so far…I’m liking it.
8) Are you a by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of writer, or do you have to use an outline to put your collective thoughts into some semblance of common sense?
I am a seat-of-the-pants style writer. However, due to some heavy urging from my good friend Lara Adrian…I need to become a better plotter and get a good Outline going before diving in. It would make writing easier.
9) Which of your books is your favorite? Why?
If you are asking published already, I would say EYES OF BETRAYAL. Egan ‘Villain’ Tate is one of my favorite heroes. I loved writing him. He’s a true Bad Boy.
10) Do you incorporate some of yourself into your characters? Personality traits? Likes? Dislikes? Absolutely. It would be hard to write and not put myself in my work. I always think it’s funny when someone I know says they can tell I wrote it because of the way I write and the things added to the book.
11) What do you think is the perfect hero/heroine? Why?I love doing heroes, They are my favorite part of the book. Writing them seems so much easier than the heroines. I don’t know why. It just is. And I love Alpha males and strong females to love them. I cannot write a book any other way.
12) Do you have any suggestions/comments for prospective authors?
Don’t ever give up. Writing is not easy. Publishing it is even harder. But most of all…listen to your peers and take their advice. Don’t ever think your work is perfect, because there is always something that can be improved upon.
JUST FOR FUN:
1) What is the sexiest or most erotic thing someone has said to you?
You look beautiful…especially when I don’t feel as if I do.
2) If you could be an animal, what would it be? Why?I think I would love to be a mountain lion. They are such beautiful predators.
3) If you had super powers, what would they be? Why?I would love to be able to fly. I am impatient…so getting somewhere faster and on my own would make life grand!
4) If you could be an immortal, what would you want to be? Why?There can be only one…sorry, I thought of the Highlander first off. But if I could be immortal, I would want to be a vampire. I find them very sexy.
5) If you could change three things in the world, what would they be? Why?World peace. I do not like hate. Prejudiced people. Again, I do not like hate. The ability to forgive. If everyone could forgive, there would be a lot less hate.
6) What would be a perfect date for you?
Dinner and a movie. I love simple…that or maybe he could whisk me away to a tropical island.
7) Is there anywhere you’d like to visit? Why?Hawaii. I’ve always wanted to go there. I probably would never want to come home. It’s paradise, in my opinion. Beaches and warm sunny skies.
8) Do you have any obsessions? What are they?Coffee and chick flicks. I love those silly little movies with happy-ever-afters. They make me smile at the end of the movie…every time. And anything coffee will do…love it!
9) Do you have a crush on any actor/actress? Who?Wow…probably lots of actors. Do I have to pick just one? I love Johnny Depp…so I guess I would have to pick one it would be him. He’s aged very well.

Marcus "Snake" Gallego lives in the fast lane. Play hard, ride fast, die young. But nothing seems to touch him, not until his faithless wife turns up dead, and a pretty little detective slams his head against a bar, cuffing his hands behind his back.
LeAnne McVeigh has a murderer to catch and "Snake" is a prime suspect according to her fiancé, the County prosecutor. She fights her growing attraction to the biker, but the pull is too strong to ignore and more than that, he proves to be her friend in adversity.
EXCERPT:
He had been wrong. There lay passion beneath the stiff exterior of LeAnne McVeigh, but words could not describe the fire and magnetism between them. He had followed her, angry at her parting words.
Damn her for not understanding, damn her for not caring.
His wife lay dead a mere fifty feet away, and here the sweet detective was, making him forget.
But he was a man of passion, a man with needs. Debra Lewis had been his only affair before or after Jillian met her fate, and he had regretted that--every last minute.
Now, here he was again, desiring a woman who belonged to another. And he had no doubt that if he bedded LeAnne McVeigh, the good Prosecutor Baker would make him regret ever laying a hand on her. His life would probably become a living hell. But what else in the last three months had he to live for?
Screw ethics.
He moved his hand down her back and cupped the soft cheek of her derriere. A perfect fit. He felt the sudden apprehension in her kiss, but he used his skilled tongue to coax her, soothe any misgivings she might have.
He left her mouth, his lips making a trek to her ear. Her breath came in short pants; her head tilted to the side. A soft moan escaped her lips.
"We shouldn't..." she whispered. "The caretaker..."
"Can watch," he said huskily before dipping his tongue into her ear.
She trembled beneath his touch. "We can't," she said, though her fingers tangled in the hair at the base of his head, telling Snake a different story.
"We can." He nipped at her earlobe and the small silver hoop hanging there.
"Chad."
"Screw him."
Her body tensed, causing him to sense her withdrawal.
Removing his hand from her backside, he slipped it beneath the short skirt and silk panties, cupping her bare flesh. Her intake was sharp but she did not move from his embrace as her eyes met his.
His fingers kneaded the soft skin.
"Don't," she whispered.
He knew when to back off and he was not far from it. Yet he could not resist the urge to push the boundaries. "You want me as much as I do you." He glared at her. "Deny it."
She pushed at his chest. "You're so full of yourself, Gallego."
He tightened his hold on the small of her back and held her firmly against his pulsing erection. "Deny it," he ordered.
When she did not, he moved his hand lower and dipped into the cleft of her thighs, feeling how close to the truth he was. Her eyes widened and her pulse beat heavily at the base of her throat. Snake grinned, then pulled his hand from her.
"Deny it. You're so wet--"
"Damn you, Snake," she spat, pushing herself from his embrace and stepping back a few steps.
With her kiss-reddened lips and mussed hair, she looked like she had just stepped from the sack. Too bad it wasn't his. The nearly painful ache in his groin told him just how much he regretted the sudden separation. There would be no soothing his ache today--maybe never.
She smoothed back the hair slipping from her braid. "You're such an egotist. You wouldn't know how to seduce a woman if you tried."
"I don't think I was doing such a bad job a minute ago."
"Shows how little you know."
His ire peaked. He raised one brow. "Care for me to prove that fact to you again?"
"Go to hell."
"I'm already there, sweetheart."

Interview with Julie Lynn Hayes
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
1) Links to website and list of books with purchase links:
All links are on my blog:
http://julielynnhayes.blogspot.com
2) How long have you been writing? What got you in to writing?
I’ve been writing for over forty years. I’ve always been in love with books. I started reading when I was 2. About the age of 9 I remember the teacher reading us a particularly interesting story about a group of children on an island, and their adventures—I think it involved dinosaurs. I started thinking of my own stories and writing them down.
3) What was your first published book? Looking back, is there anything you’d change about it?
My first published book was To The Max, which was released by Dreamspinner Press on March 26, 2010. Looking back, I might have shortened it a little, but I don’t think so, not really.
4) What or Who has influenced your writing?
First I think are my children, especially my daughters Katie and Sarah. They’re the ones that got me interested in being on the Internet, forced me to have a journal on LJ, which led to my role playing – they got me interested in fanfiction writing. And that played a large part in giving me the courage to write my own stories. They introduced me to the stories about Remus and Sirius which eventually inspired me to write about my own gay couples. As for writers, I feel that I have been influenced especially by P.G. Wodehouse and William Faulkner—in other words, I have a quirky sense of humor and I’m longwinded
5) Where do you get your ideas?
I can find ideas anywhere—from my life, from the world around me, out of my head. I got an idea for a series (as yet unwritten) simply because the word timeshare popped into my mind. Sometimes it’s a character’s voice that begins to speak, so I start writing and see where it goes – that led to both Revelations and Leonardo di Caprio is a Vampire. And To The Max. Situations. People. Words. Faces. Feelings. I’ve learned to write down the ones I want to keep in a file, so I don’t forget them. Then they have to wait their turn to be born.
6) What hinders your writing? (distractions? noise?)
Sometimes I distract myself by getting into a game of something, or watching You Tube videos—you can’t watch just one! I find it hard to carry on a conversation while I write, and I keep telling my daughter that. It doesn’t help. I threaten to get a sign made that says Writer at Work or something, but I haven’t yet. I usually wear headphones and listen to music. Some music can be distracting, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I prefer something without lyrics, like classical, or ES Posthumus. But I’ve also written to Korn singing Y’All Want a Single, Metallica’s One, or any of a number of soundtracks, including Repo! The Genetic Opera. Different books demand different tactics. Since I don’t have the luxury of a room with a door I can close, I adapt.
7) What genre are you most comfortable with? What would you like to explore?
Right now, I’m heavily into Romance, especially m/m romance. I do love Regencies, though, and want to try one of those. I’m working on a YA also, as well as a historical paranormal. What I would really like is to be known as a writer, not a genre writer, but a writer. I have an idea for a detective novel (which my son helped me with), so we’ll see how that goes—it involves a gay werewolf detective, and I am thinking of setting it in the 30’s or 40’s or something. I would like to do more historicals too, cause I love history a great deal.
8) Are you a by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of writer, or do you have to use an outline to put your collective thoughts into some semblance of common sense?
I am a pantser, although I try to think ahead, at least for the current chapter, so I know where I’m going. But I believe in letting my plots flow from my characters, so that they’re more real. Sometimes I do know in advance some of the things that will happen. Sometimes those things don’t happen the way I thought they would. I love exploring with my characters. I feel like I can’t telegraph the plot to my readers if I don’t know what it is myself. Nothing worse than knowing in advance the entire plot of a book and what will happen. I don’t mind knowing some of it, or guessing at it, but all of it? I might as well write it myself.
9) Which of your books is your favorite? Why?
Probably To The Max. It was my first and I really love Max and his world. I wanted to do something different. He’s a werewolf and he’s gay, but there isn’t a lot of focus in the first book on his being a werewolf, more about him as a man, and his relationship with his longtime lover. He isn’t an Alpha male, he’s older than a lot of the heroes of gay romances (he’s 44), and yes, he has weaknesses, including a lack of spine at times in dealing with his lover, his family and his friends. But he’s a good man, and not every hero wears shining armor or shines in every situation. Max is human, even if he is a werewolf, and I love him for it.
10) Do you incorporate some of yourself into your characters? Personality traits? Likes? Dislikes?
Definitely! There is a lot of me in Max. We both hate coconut, fear heights and old bridges and drowning. I have my weak moments too, but I think I stand up to people more than he does. I write fiction, he doesn’t, at least not now. I gave him my dream car—a mid-70’s Monte Carlo—and I gave him a little house in the woods, like I would love to have. He plays the piano better than I do (I could use some lessons), and neither one of us really carries a tune.
There are smaller pieces of me in my other characters. Samantha in Dark Love has some of my physical traits, ie red hair and blue eyes, as well as my interest in the Tarot and vampires and Count Dracula—no wonder I gave her a vampire lover lol
11) What do you think is the perfect hero/heroine? Why?
The perfect hero/heroine is someone who is not perfect, who has flaws, but who works to overcome them. If someone is perfect, what is there really to say about them? I think he or she should feel real, so they can resonate with the reader, create feelings in them, whether like or dislike. Even if you want to kill him or her, at least that is a feeling. Apathy is not a good thing to instill in a reader.
12) Do you have any suggestions/comments for prospective authors?
First and foremost, I would say to live. Life is where ideas come from, feelings are felt, experiences are lived. You need to understand more than your own perspective, you need other points of view. Write from within, from what you feel. When they say write what you know, that doesn’t mean that you have to know everything you write—I’m sure Tolkien never actually saw hobbits or dwarves or Ents, and somehow I doubt Bram Stoker was ever bitten by a vampire. But they took what they were interested in, what they had feelings for, and they made it work because they cared. No matter what genre you write, you have to care about it. If you don’t, although you may be technically correct, your writing will lack heart, and that is what you really want to have—heart.
JUST FOR FUN:
1) What is the sexiest or most erotic thing someone has said to you?
Oh, that’s a funny question. The first thing that came to mind was something my second husband told me, when we were first acquainted. We worked together at a liquor store—he was the assistant manager and I was the cashier. At first I didn’t like him, but he kept dropping hints about himself, and how special he was, or words to that effect. The line that eventually hooked me was when he said, “You’re never going to find out.” On the surface, it wasn’t especially sexy or erotic, but it had such connotations and undercurrents. We’ve been married for 30 years now (although separated for 6)
2) If you had super powers, what would they be? Why?
Invisibility. To get into the movies, of course! But more than that, to be able to absorb life and people on a more up close and personal basis, without their knowing it. To observe, to listen, and to learn.
3) If you could be an immortal, what would you want to be? Why?
A vampire. Vampires are sexy and awesome and amazing. Oh, and I’d want to be a male vampire. Gay, of course.
4) If you could change three things in the world, what would they be? Why?
Everyone would have a place to live, everyone would have foot do eat, and there would be no prejudice or discrimination against anyone.
5) What would be a perfect date for you?
Date? What’s that? Lol I haven’t dated in over 30 years. If I were to ever date again, it would depend on how well I know my date. If well enough, then I wouldn’t mind cooking dinner, and maybe watching a movie at my place. If not, maybe dinner out, and a movie. Or a walk in the park, if the weather was good. It’s hard to talk in a movie, so you don’t really get the chance to know one another.
6) Is there anywhere you’d like to visit? Why?
Many places, but the first that comes to mind is Tuscany. I fell in love with the area when I read Under the Tuscan Sun. I want to go there, and stay in a villa, maybe own one someday. It’s a beautiful beautiful place. And I love Italian food. And I’d love to go to La Scala. Now, if only I knew Italian!
7) Do you have any obsessions? What are they?
Okay, total honesty, right? Anyone who knows me knows I have an obsession with Gary Oldman, that’s a no-brainer. I am obsessed with m/m romances, coffee, role playing (I keep coming back to it). Most of all I’m obsessed with writing; it’s my grand obsession, the one I’ll never give up.
8) Do you have a crush on any actor/actress? Who?
I think I just answered that, but I’ll repeat it. Gary Oldman. Have crushed on him for over 18 years. There is something about him, something magic in his eyes, and in his smile. I adore him, forever.
Lesser crushes would include Nic Cage, Jason Isaacs, Daniel Craig and Gerard Butler; that list is subject to change.

Life is truly beautiful! Richard actually asked me to marry him, do you believe it? Of course there’s a small hurdle we have to cross – namely that gay marriage isn’t legal here in Missouri. But it’s a start, right?
Things are looking up for us, now that I know the truth about Richard. Our careers are doing well, we’re blissfully happy together, and Mother has given us her blessing! My sister Diana is going through boyfriends like some people change clothes, I wonder if she’ll ever find Mr. Right? Cat’s cousin has turned out to be a real interesting character, and the most interesting thing is – he’s a werewolf! And more disturbing than that, I think that maybe my father (that shadowy figure who’s never figured in my life) might just be someone named Jason. It’s a long story.
Just when I thought I had things figured out, they change, and I find out that what I thought I knew was just so much nonsense. In other words – lies. Who can I trust? Other than Richard, of course. And what should I believe? And why does it seem like the world is trying to shake me out of my lycanthropic closet?
What’s a gay werewolf to do?

EXCERPT:
Now, where were we? Oh yes, Richard and I have our lips locked together like a couple of love-starved fools, and we're crying and laughing at the same time, and I've just agreed to marry him….
Yes, I did say marry, and I know there are those who will look upon us askance. Gay marriage is far from an accepted lifestyle in this country, even in this supposedly enlightened day and age. In fact it is not only frowned upon, but largely banned. And mostly by people who are afraid of us. Why? Good question. I won't even get into religious ethics, or a discussion of the Bible, nor Christian precepts. Let me just say that disliking or hating someone on the basis of their sexual orientation is just as wrong as hating them for the color of their skin, or for their religious beliefs. And forbidding people to legally wed for the same reason is simply wrong. Where do you draw the line? Mixed race couples, mixed religion couples? What happened to loving one another, regardless of who they are? We are not sinners, we are simply human….
Anyway, we are here and warm… and touching, and loving, and all of the bad air has been expelled, and all that is left is the love in our hearts, the love we bear for one another, which envelops us and cradles us gently. Now we truly begin….
Principessa, our darling King Charles spaniel and our only child, is running circles around us now, excited by our excitement. Her daddies are together again, and very obviously happy. We break the kiss to bestow caresses on our baby. She clambers in between us and we manage to cuddle around her.
"Max, I'm so sorry…"
"Shhh." I lay a finger against his lips. "No apologies, no regrets. Just us and the future. Our future. Together."
He nods solemnly. "I'll never leave you again, Max," he swears, "I'll never disappear without a word, I promise. I'm yours for as long as you'll have me."
"And I am yours," I echo, "'til death do us part."
Our lips come together with soft sighs, and sensual shivers that run between us like electrical charges. We haven't touched at all since the ill-fated night of the last full moon, and the undischarged desire we bear for one another is enough to jump-start a dead car battery.
"I've missed you so much," he murmurs into my lips, "I need you, Max, I always will…."
"And I need you Richard," I reply softly. "Nights without you are far too long… and lonely…."
He moves closer now, his tongue seeking and receiving permission to enter my mouth, his fingers winding through my hair. We are content to let our lips do all the talking. No need to rush, we have all the time in the world—now that we are together again, never to be parted. Our eyes locked in mutual admiration. Our hearts bound in mutual bliss. Our puppy becomes bored with us, and our apparent inactivity, and settles down for a nap, watching us with those big, brown spaniel eyes. We stretch out together in the grass, oblivious to what we might be doing to our three-piece suits. Stains are made to be removed, are they not?
He rolls me over to take the dominant position above me—I love when he does that, for just between us he does dominate and I do tend to submit—it's simply the natural order of our lives. He catches my wrists in his strong grasp, pulling them over my head, holding them against the soft grass, showing me who’s in control—not that I don't know that already.
"Tell me what Max wants." He rubs against me suggestively; the material separating us only serves to enhance the friction between our hardening cocks in a delightfully maddening way.
"Max wants Richard," I respond promptly, predictably. "Max wants Richard to come back home, where he belongs… in Max's bed… their bed…."
"Our bed," Richard echoes, licking my chin softly, squirming against me.
God, I want him so badly.
"And by the way, who's been sleeping in Richard's bed while he's been gone?"
"Not the wolf," I chuckle softly, "that would be Rachel. She's been staying with me. I let her have the bed and I'm in the library, on the couch. All alone…."
"Not tonight, sweet thing." He moves his tongue along my jaw line, sending chills all through me. "I hope Rachel doesn't mind, but she is officially dispossessed."
"She won't mind, now she can go back to Mark. I'm sure he'll be happy, too."
"I'm sure," he replies. "Max, you wanna take a shower?"
My cock twitches at his suggestion. "I think we can do that." I attempt to maintain an air of casualness, but I fail—miserably. I’m far too excited to be suave and detached.
He brushes his fingertips lightly over my cheeks. "Max could use a shave too," he observes. "I can do that for him, if he likes?"
If he likes? I purr warmly at his touch. Max the recluse hasn't been as diligent as he should have been in keeping the five o'clock shadow at bay. Not that it's much of a shadow, my hair is too light for that, but being a wolf does have its disadvantages. One of them is a tendency toward hirsuteness. But this works out, 'cause I love the way Richard handles a straight razor—deftly, surely, and very, very sensually. I’m about to tell him so, but Swan Lake begins. Damn, someone has horrible timing.
I try to ignore it, but some people don't take a hint.
"Max, go ahead and get it, they'll just call back," my lover points out, releasing my hands. With a sigh, I squirm, raising my hips so that I can pull the phone from my pocket.
"Hello?"
"Max?" It's Juliet. Interruptus maternus. "You were supposed to call me…."

EXCERPT:
Corbin knew he’d drawn a bad bull. He’d sort of had an uneasy feeling earlier that day when he’d first arrived at the fairgrounds, but after he’d held Bella in his arms, everything changed.
She gave him strength. She made him believe in himself and his abilities. If Corbin listened to some of the whispers around him, staying on Captain Crazy was next to impossible, but for some reason he felt like a man who was about to take the best ride of his life.
Tucking his gloved hands under the rope, Corbin realized all eyes were on him. Hell, half the fans were on their feet, acting like they were getting ready to watch a cowboy’s last rodeo. He hated it when these situations happened. Half the time, a bull’s reputation made a loser out of a cowboy. When the crowd seemed to stand behind the bull rather than the man riding him, well, it just seemed like the odds stacked up against a fella.
Corbin searched the stands, found the large letter A, and dropped his gaze down, looking straight across the arena into the brilliant-blue sparkling, and quite watered down, eyes of the woman he loved. He tilted his hat and slapped his chest.
Bella was his heart. The rodeo was his job.
“You’re good to go,” Travis assured him, helping Corbin lower himself atop the angry bull that would either make or break him in this competition. “You got this, Corbin.”
Corbin swung his gaze toward Bella, one last time. “You’re damn straight I got this.” Smiling wide, he raised his right arm and his head and shoulders flew back. “Okay, fellas! Let’s see if this bull can give a good ride!”

Writing, Baking, and Gardening, oh my!
I thought I'd do something a little different today for my blog post. I'm sure everyone gets tired of the same old excerpt posts. Today I want to share a little about me and all the crazy hobbies I get myself into.
Obviously, writing is one of the things I thoroughly enjoy. I have several books available with Amber Quill Press, and several more in the works. Now if I could only find the time to actually write... Of course, maybe if I'd stop finding new hobbies, I might have more time to write! haha.
From a mental health perspective, I'd say hobbies are a good thing--granted they don't break the bank. I'd say, out of all the hobbies I have, writing would probably cost me the least, and provides a little bit of extra income. To spend on other hobbies! *grin*
When I got married in 2009, I wanted to do some things to help save a little bit of money. Being the crafty person I am, I made pretty much all the decorations, the invitations, etc. Even though I'm a pretty good seamstress, I refused to sew my own dress (did that once, but that's another story). Anyhow, I got the bright idea to do my own cake. Now, I'd made some simple cakes before using buttercream and a star-tip to fill in the shapes, but I'd never tackled a wedding cake or fondant, or roses, or anything to that extreme. Needless to say, after several Wilton classes at my local Hobby Lobby, and about a gazillion dollars in cake making supplies (okay, maybe not a gazillion, but close!), I did manage to bake and decorate my own 3 tiered wedding cake, covered in homemade marshmallow fondant, and decorated with gumpaste roses dusted with shimmering luster dust.
From Thursday to Sunday, I got about 3 hours total of sleep. My husband (who was a tremendous help) and I finally pooped out about 6 pm our first night in Jamaica. Here's a pic of the final product:
Despite the lack of sleep, and the nerve-wracking wonder if it was going to turn out or not, I was pleased with the result. My backup plan, should it have gone to crap--since you can't exactly get a wedding cake last minute--was a couple of ice-cream cakes from Dairy Queen stacked on top of each other. I think my hubby would have liked them much better.
While I haven't tackled another wedding cake, and am a little leary about making cakes for other people's special occassions, I do still do cake decorating, mainly for family and close friends.
Recently, I've embarked upon another hobby. Gardening. Yes, I'm wondering the same thing. Gardening? I haven't had a garden in over 15 years!!! And then, I pretty much remember staking out a plot in my yard, turning the dirt over a bit, tossing in some seeds and hoping for the best. All I remember is lots and lots of zucchini.
I guess it all started with our vinyl fence. Our old wooden fence had gotten so dilapidated that I was certain a strong wind would knock it down. Then my dog would run free and probably eat one of the neighbors and I'd get sued. Seriously, I have a chow chow. She's not nice. I don't think she even likes me. Anyhow, a significant portion of our tax returns went to replacing our old fence with a bright, new, white vinyl fence. I swear, this sucker is so stark it's blinding.
I'd always played with the idea of building some raised garden boxes on the side of my deck out back. You know, one of those areas you have in your yard that seems like it's going to waste. So I told my hubby, I'd like to build some boxes this year, since we're putting up a new fence, lets do some work on the back yard, too. At first, I was just going to have him build me some raised boxes out of landscape timber, but then I got on You Tube...Anyone else get in trouble on there? I do. Way too many ideas for someone like me. I'm like one of those horses that needs blinders.
So I get on You Tube, looking up raised garden bed construction, and I come across a video for making boxes out of vinyl fencing. Oh My God! I loved it. They were so pretty--if you could consider garden boxes as such. So of course, since we'd just put up an expensive white vinyl fence and these darlings would look lovely against it, I told my husband that's what I want. Five boxes and about $500 later, I got my raised garden.

Now I'm off to study Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. Oh, and by the way, I did do a little writing today. *wink*
I'd love to hear about some of your hobby stories if you'd be willing to share. And if you'd still like an excerpt or two, there's several on my website to choose from.
